When an office chair slowly lowers while you are sitting, the pneumatic gas cylinder is often the culprit. Replacing the cylinder can extend the life of an otherwise comfortable chair and save you from replacing the entire thing.

This standard office chair gas lift provides smooth seat-height adjustment and holds the chair at the selected height. It is suitable for many common task chairs, executive chairs and office-supply-store chairs that use a standard top-button cylinder and five-point base.

A 50 mm outer cylinder is commonly used on office-chair gas lifts, but diameter alone does not confirm compatibility. The activation style, upper and lower tapers, cylinder length and chair-base construction also matter.

Will this gas cylinder fit my office chair?

This cylinder fits many chairs, but office-chair cylinders are not all interchangeable. Please use the following as a guide.

Generally compatible

• Many ICON, HON and Global office chairs, depending on the model and base
• Many standard office-supply-store chairs
• Many task and executive office chairs
• Chairs using a standard top-button cylinder
• Chairs with a conventional five-point base accepting an approximately 50 mm cylinder

Not compatible

• Steelcase Leap chairs
• Herman Miller Aeron chairs
• Chairs using side-activated, cable-activated or model-specific cylinders
• Drafting stools requiring a taller cylinder or foot ring
• Chairs with an unusual base opening or cylinder mounting system

The Aeron uses a model-specific cylinder assembly and Herman Miller provides its own procedures and parts support, so I would not position this standard cylinder as an Aeron replacement.

Compatibility must be confirmed

• Haworth Zody: Zody chairs have been produced with different cylinder activation systems. Do not order this cylinder for a Zody without checking with us.
• Global office chairs: Compatible with many models, but the chair base and mechanism must be checked.
• Humanscale Freedom: A dedicated Humanscale replacement cylinder is recommended.
• Any chair where the existing cylinder differs in shape, length or activation method

Haworth lists Zody pneumatic cylinders and activation components as chair-specific service parts, which supports taking a cautious approach rather than calling a standard cylinder compatible with every Zody.

How to check your chair before ordering

Before purchasing, compare your existing cylinder with the measurements and photos on this page.

Please check:

1. Activation style: Does your chair mechanism press a small button on top of the cylinder?
2. Outer diameter: Is the main cylinder tube approximately 1.96 inches or 50 mm wide?
3. Overall length: Is the existing cylinder reasonably close to the dimensions shown?
4. Chair base: Does the cylinder fit into a conventional five-point chair base?
5. Chair type: Is it a standard-height office chair rather than a stool or drafting chair?

Why does my office chair keep sinking?

A chair that slowly lowers while occupied usually has a worn pneumatic gas cylinder. Replacing the cylinder may restore normal height adjustment without replacing the entire chair.

Is this a universal office chair cylinder?

No. It fits many standard office chairs, but some manufacturers and chair models use different dimensions or activation systems.

Will it fit a Steelcase Leap chair?

No. Use a replacement cylinder intended for the specific Steelcase Leap model.

Will it fit a Herman Miller Aeron chair?

No. The Aeron requires a cylinder intended for that chair and model generation.

Will it fit a Haworth Zody chair?

Possibly on some versions, but we do not recommend ordering without first confirming the chair model, cylinder dimensions and activation style.

Will it fit a Global office chair?

It fits many Global chairs that use a conventional base and top-button cylinder, but compatibility depends on the chair model and base style.

Will it fit a Humanscale Freedom chair?
