A Simpler Way to Order the Freedom Headrest Chair
This Simply Black version removes much of the configuration work from the buying process. The chair is offered in a ready-selected combination while retaining the core ergonomic design that makes the Freedom Headrest distinctive.
If you want broader upholstery, frame or caster choices, the All Finishes version provides additional customization.
Ergonomic Support Without Constant Adjusting
The Freedom chair was designed around a simple idea: the chair should respond to the person rather than requiring the person to continually adjust the chair.
Its counterbalanced recline responds automatically to body weight, supporting the user through upright and reclined positions without a separate recline tension control or traditional tilt lock.
Dynamic Headrest That Moves With You
The Freedom Headrest is designed to support the head and neck as the user reclines. Rather than needing to reposition the headrest every time your posture changes, it moves naturally with the sitter.
As you return to a more upright working position, the headrest moves away so it does not push the head forward during computer work.
Arm Support That Stays With You
Freedom’s armrests are connected to the back structure of the chair, allowing them to remain supportive as the user moves between upright and reclined positions.
The arms move up and down together, making height adjustment quick while maintaining balanced support on both sides.
Contoured Cushioning for Everyday Comfort
The seat, backrest and headrest use sculpted cushioning shaped around the body’s natural contours to help distribute pressure and provide supportive comfort throughout the workday.
The result is a substantial sitting feel without requiring a long list of manual chair adjustments.
Seat Depth for Different Leg Lengths
The seat depth can be adjusted forward or backward to better suit users with different leg lengths.
Proper seat depth helps provide support beneath the thighs while maintaining comfortable clearance behind the knees.
Designed by Niels Diffrient
Designer Niels Diffrient approached office-chair ergonomics differently. Rather than adding more knobs, locks and adjustment levers, Freedom uses body weight and carefully balanced mechanics to support movement automatically.
The result is an ergonomic chair that provides meaningful adjustment while remaining unusually simple to use.

Rodney – Staff Reviewer –
Using this chair both at office and home, I really appreciate the long comfort it has. Whether I’m fresh or tired, the firm support works well for me. And I really like the minimal adjustments to figure out. Humanscale backs don’t tilt lock. Took a little getting used to but now I love it – better for core strength.
